Post-Operative Care After Root Canal Treatment

At Yaas Dental in Narre Warren, we aim to make your root canal treatment as smooth and comfortable as possible. After each appointment, it’s important to follow proper post-operative care instructions to support healing, prevent infection, and ensure the best treatment outcome.

What to Expect After Treatment

Root canal treatment is usually completed over one or more appointments. After each visit, you may notice:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Tenderness when biting or touching the tooth
  • Mild swelling or gum soreness
  • Discomfort around the injection site

These symptoms are normal and temporary, often improving within 24–48 hours. Sensitivity may last several days to a few weeks in some cases.

Managing Discomfort

  • Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help alleviate discomfort. Follow the dosage as directed.
  • Antibiotics: If prescribed, complete the full course even if symptoms improve before finishing.

If discomfort worsens or swelling develops, please call us promptly on 03 8774 2115.

Eating and Chewing

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the final restoration (such as a crown) is placed.
  • Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods (e.g., nuts, lollies, chewing gum) that could dislodge the temporary filling or damage the tooth.

Temporary Filling Care

Between root canal visits, a temporary filling will be placed to protect the tooth.

  • If the temporary filling becomes loose or falls out, contact us immediately to have it replaced. Leaving the tooth exposed can lead to reinfection.
  • Be gentle while brushing around the area and avoid using dental floss too aggressively.
  • When flossing near the treated tooth, slide the floss out sideways instead of snapping it up, which could dislodge the temporary filling.

Final Restoration

A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy becomes more brittle over time. In most cases, a full-coverage dental crown is recommended to protect the tooth from future fractures.

  • Your dentist will advise when to schedule this final restoration.
  • Delaying the crown placement can increase the risk of the tooth breaking.

Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is key to the long-term success of your root canal treatment:

  • Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush at a 45-degree angle.
  • Floss once daily to clean between teeth and around the treated tooth.
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste to protect surrounding teeth from decay.

Numbness After Anaesthetic

Be cautious until the local anaesthetic wears off:

  • Avoid eating or drinking hot foods to prevent burns.
  • Refrain from chewing on the numb side to avoid biting your cheeks, lips, or tongue.
  • Numbness in the upper jaw usually lasts about 2-4 hours, and in the lower jaw, it may last up to 4-6 hours.
