š¹ 1. After Orthodontic Separators
What They Are:
Separators (or spacers) are small elastic rings placed between teeth to create space before placing bands.
What to Expect:
- Mild soreness or tightness between teeth for 1ā3 days
- Difficulty flossing where separators are placed
Do:
- Eat soft foods if teeth feel tender
- Use pain relief if needed (e.g., Panadol or Nurofen)
- Brush carefully around the separator
Donāt:
- Floss between teeth with separators
- Eat sticky or chewy foods (gum, lollies, toffee)
- Try to remove or play with the separators
ā ļø If a separator falls out, contact usāsome movement may be okay, but we may need to replace it.
š¹ 2. After Bracket Bonding & Band Cementation
What to Expect:
- Mild pressure or tightness after bonding
- Brackets and bands may feel unfamiliar at first
- Some minor irritation to lips or cheeks
Care Tips:
- Use orthodontic wax for any irritation
- Avoid hard or sticky foods that can dislodge brackets (e.g., nuts, popcorn, caramel)
- Brush teeth and around brackets gently but thoroughly
- Use interdental brushes and orthodontic flossers
šŖ„ Ask us about fluoride rinses to protect enamel around brackets.
š¹ 3. After Wire Adjustments or Wire Placement
Normal Reactions:
- Mild soreness or tooth mobility (especially after new wire placement)
- Light pressure for 2ā4 days
- Occasional ulcers or cheek irritation
Pain Relief:
- Use orthodontic wax as needed
- Take mild pain relief (e.g., paracetamol)
- Eat soft foods like pasta, rice, smoothies, mashed potatoes, yoghurt
Wire Poking or Irritation?
- Apply wax to the sharp area
- Call us if it continues or causes a sore spot
š” Daily Care Tips for Orthodontic Patients
Oral Hygiene:
- Brush after every meal (minimum 2x/day)
- Use a soft-bristled brush or electric brush
- Use interdental brushes and floss threaders to clean between teeth and wires
Dietary Advice:
Avoid:
- Hard foods: nuts, raw carrots, crusty bread
- Sticky foods: chewing gum, toffees, jelly beans
- Chewing ice or biting pens
Eat:
- Soft fruits, steamed vegetables, yoghurt, pasta, rice, scrambled eggs
Stay Hydrated:
Drink plenty of water to rinse and keep the mouth clean throughout the day.
