Root Canal Risk

  • Pain – few hours to days
  • Infection
  • Swelling of gum, face lasting for days.
  • Trismus – limited opening of jaw – temporary
  • Tooth fracture
  • Persistent pain or infection
  • Hypochlorite incident – Irrigation solution pushed into jaw bone causing pain, swelling, infection, numbness.
  • Instrument fracture – dentist may leave instrument tip in tooth
  • Perforation of root canal – may need surgery or extraction
  • Difficulty finding root canals
  • Calcified/blocked root canals
  • Success rate is high but limited. Failure rate is about 5-10%
  • Chance of needing Root Canal Therapy redone in future
  • Chance of tooth needing to be extracted after root canal therapy
  • Early tooth loss caused by gum disease around tooth.
  • May need to be referred to specialist
