🧒 Post-Operative Care Instructions After Children’s Dental Treatment
Yaas Dental Care – Narre Warren & Surrounds
At Yaas Dental Care, we understand how important it is for your child’s dental experience to be positive, safe, and healing. After your child undergoes any dental procedure—whether it’s a stainless steel crown, filling, pulpotomy, or extraction—proper aftercare is essential to ensure a smooth recovery and long-term oral health.
This guide provides clear post-operative instructions for parents and caregivers following various children’s dental procedures.
🦷 1. After Fillings in Baby or Permanent Teeth
What to Expect:
- Temporary numbness of the lips, cheeks, or tongue (can last 2–4 hours)
- Mild sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days
Care Tips:
- Supervise your child until the numbness wears off to prevent lip or cheek biting
- Avoid hard or chewy foods for the rest of the day
- Soft diet recommended (e.g., yoghurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies)
- Regular brushing and flossing can resume the next day
🛡️ 2. After Stainless Steel (SS) Crowns
What to Expect:
- Slight discomfort or pressure after placement
- Mild gum irritation around the crown
- Crown may feel slightly high for a day or two
Care Tips:
- Encourage soft foods for 24 hours
- Use Panadol or Nurofen if your child experiences mild soreness
- Keep the area clean by brushing gently around the crown
- Gum tenderness will settle in a few days
✅ Stainless steel crowns are very durable and protect baby teeth until they naturally fall out.
🧬 3. After Pulpotomy (“Baby Tooth Nerve Treatment”)
What to Expect:
- Mild soreness or pressure in the treated tooth
- Stainless steel crown usually placed over the tooth after pulpotomy
Care Tips:
- Soft diet for the first 24 hours
- Over-the-counter pain relief if needed
- Avoid chewing on the treated side for a day
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent reinfection
🦷 4. After Tooth Extraction (Baby or Permanent Teeth)
What to Expect:
- Slight bleeding or oozing for a few hours post-extraction
- Some discomfort as numbness wears off
Care Tips:
- Keep pressure on the gauze for 30–60 minutes
- No spitting, rinsing, or using straws for 24 hours (prevents dislodging the clot)
- Offer cold, soft foods (e.g., jelly, ice cream, smoothies)
- Use pain relief as directed by your dentist
- Brush gently, avoiding the extraction site for a day
⚠️ Call us immediately if there is persistent bleeding, swelling, or fever.
🍬 5. General Aftercare Tips for Kids
- Numbness Awareness: Children often chew on numb lips or cheeks without realising. Watch them closely until full feeling returns.
- Diet: Stick to soft, cool foods after dental treatment. Avoid anything hard, hot, or spicy on the day of treatment.
- Oral Hygiene: Gentle brushing is encouraged from the next day. Use a soft toothbrush.
- Emotional Reassurance: Your child may be tired or cranky after dental work. Offer comfort and reassurance.
