✨ Post-Operative Instructions After Teeth Whitening
Maintaining Your Bright, White Smile Safely & Effectively
Yaas Dental Care | Narre Warren’s Trusted Dental Clinic for Cosmetic Dentistry
Congratulations on brightening your smile with professional teeth whitening at Yaas Dental Care! To maximise and prolong your results—and to minimise any temporary sensitivity—it’s important to follow the right aftercare steps.
💡 What to Expect After Whitening
It’s normal to experience:
- Temporary tooth sensitivity to cold air, drinks, or food
- Slight gum irritation (if your gums were exposed during treatment)
- A brighter and more vibrant smile, which may continue to improve over the next 24–48 hours
These effects are usually mild and subside within a few days.
🕒 The “White Diet” – First 48 Hours
After whitening, your teeth become temporarily more porous, meaning they can absorb stains more easily. For the first 24–48 hours, avoid dark or highly pigmented foods and drinks.
Avoid:
- Coffee, tea, red wine, cola
- Berries, beetroot, tomato-based sauces
- Soy sauce, balsamic vinegar
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Coloured toothpaste or mouthwash
Stick to:
- Water, milk, clear drinks
- White rice, plain pasta, chicken, turkey
- Eggs, bananas, cauliflower, potatoes
- White bread, yoghurt
Think: “If it would stain a white T-shirt, it can stain your teeth.”
🪥 Oral Hygiene Tips
- Brush gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush and low-abrasive whitening toothpaste.
- Avoid brushing too hard—especially within a few hours of treatment—to avoid worsening sensitivity.
- Use sensitive toothpaste (e.g., Sensodyne) if you experience discomfort.
- Continue flossing and regular brushing twice daily.
🧴 Desensitising Products (If Needed)
If sensitivity is bothersome:
- Use a desensitising gel or sensitivity toothpaste.
- Avoid extremely cold or hot foods and drinks.
- Take mild pain relief (e.g., paracetamol) if needed.
Let us know if sensitivity persists longer than a week.
🚫 Habits to Avoid After Whitening
- Smoking: Not only stains but reduces whitening lifespan.
- Dark drinks without a straw: If you must consume coloured drinks, use a straw to minimise contact with teeth.
- Grinding or clenching (bruxism): Can increase enamel wear and sensitivity. Ask us about custom occlusal splints if needed.
📆 How Long Will Results Last?
With good care, your whitening results can last 6–12 months or longer. To prolong your brighter smile:
- Maintain regular dental cleans
- Follow a low-staining diet and limit dark beverages
- Consider touch-up whitening every 6–12 months
We can also provide you with custom take-home whitening trays for long-term maintenance.
